At EEHE 2022, a new topic in automotive on-board energy networks was intensively discussed. The digitalisation of power distribution in the automobile is a long overdue step and is realised with the help of electronic fuses. Semiconductor manufacturers as well as automotive suppliers and OEMs and scientists are working at full speed on the implementation at component and system level.<\/p>\n

Dr Philippe Dupuy from STMicroelectronics presented the SmartFuse as a key element for the digitalisation of power distribution on behalf of the semiconductor industry. Thanks to the diverse properties of these semiconductor components with diagnostic and protective functions and their programmability as well as the ability to switch as often as required, the previously irreversible protection of lines and consumers, which is subject to large tolerances, can be replaced by a reversible, intelligent and precise system and experiences a significant boost in terms of customer benefits and ease of maintenance. Such a step is essential for the implementation of a reliable power supply for safety-relevant systems for highly automated driving.<\/p>\n

In the contribution by Carina Eckert, BMW Group, the essential distinguishing features between conventional electrical and electronic protection were presented from the perspective of a vehicle manufacturer. An exemplary partitioning in hardware and software was explained and evaluated with regard to the delay times. A simulation model of an electronic fuse, optimised for the application in terms of accuracy and computing time, was confirmed by measurements and verified for use as a prototype, so that further investigations can follow.<\/p>\n

Prof. Stephan Frei, TU Dortmund University, presented an interim status of his scientific work on this topic. Electrification and highly automated driving increase the requirements in terms of reliability and fault tolerance of the power supply due to functional safety. Particular attention is paid to the transient behaviour of the power supply and the modelling of this behaviour in the event of a fault. Models for conventional and electronic fuses have been developed and validated. It was thus shown that both protection concepts can show very different behaviour in the event of a fault, and that this must be taken into account in the system design of the on-board power system.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
